The Graduate Programme in Teaching English to Young Learners
The Graduate Programme in Teaching English to Young Learners (GPTE) offers two specialties: English for Young Learners and CLIL and English for Young Learners, CLIL and Early Education. Polish and International students study in small groups under the guidance of experienced university faculty and mentor teachers.
The graduates of both specialisations (second cycle course/ the MA level) obtain theoretical and practical preparation in general education, second language acquisition and English language teaching. They receive university level education offered in English aimed at preparing teachers for pedagogical challenges through reflection and research in the field of language, bilingual and primary education, as well as the culture of English speaking countries.
The graduates of this course are prepared to work as English language teachers in preschool as well as early primary school level (grades 1-3) in diverse cultural and language teaching contexts, including bilingual preschools and primary schools. They gain a wide theoretical and practical preparation to teaching using Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). In addition, all students in the GPTE (both specialisations) get acquainted with subject methodologies such literacy, mathematics education, science education, art education, and music education as well as physical and health education. This thorough language teaching preparation paired with the introduction to subject teaching methodologies, allows for better understanding of the complexities of language and content integration.
Students who are interested in pursuing further studies in early education and who have the necessary requirements may follow the second specialisation: English for Young Learners, CLIL and Early Education.
All the other students are encouraged to follow the basic specialisation: English for Young Learners and CLIL. Information about requirements for the two specialisations is presented here.
In both specialisations, a key element in the preparation for the teaching profession is developing the ability to reflect and inquire. Students learn to observe, analyse and problem solve through designing and conducting action research and creating their own teaching portfolios. Students participate in extensive practice in preschools and primary schools with diverse language teaching programmes, including bilingual and international education. The GPTE cooperates with many schools in the Warsaw metropolitan area and the mentor teachers in the programme participate in the workshops and conferences.
After graduating from the GPTE, all the students obtain all necessary qualifications to pursue doctorate studies (a third cycle studies).
English for Young Learners, CLIL and Early Education is offered to students who want to obtain theoretical and practical preparation in general education, second language acquisition, English language teaching and content and language integration (CLIL) and are qualified to teach English in kindergarten and grades 1-3 of primary school.
